Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with both Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes showcase minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace. The northern villages of Nungwi and Kendwa have wide beaches lined with hotels. Zanzibar North-east Coast is the island’s prime location. Most of Zanzibar’s top high-end accommodations are set on the north-east beaches. The diving is excellent here because there’s not much tidal variation and the archipelago’s best reefs of Mnemba Island lie about a kilometre or half mile offshore.
